With Mother’s Day approaching, I like to take some time to think about how moms really are the unsung heroes of any household. It’s true! I never truly appreciated everything my mother did for my brother and me – you know, the daily “mom” stuff – until I had a daughter of my own.
Turns out, being a mom is hard work, but I don’t have to tell you that. If you’re reading this blog, there’s a good chance that you’re a mom, too.
And if you’re a mom, you know full well that motherhood, as they often say, is a 24 hour a day job. (Yes, even when you’re sleeping, you’re on call and ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice.)
My own motherly job recently got a whole lot more heroic thanks to the addition of an eight-week-old boxer puppy to our household. (That’s her below.) In many ways, puppies are like human babies. They poop and pee when and where they want to, they chew anything within reach, and they cry and fuss when you lock them in their crate. Our new puppy isn’t a fan of the crate, and neither was our daughter. (Kidding!)
But my mom did that stuff, too. The only difference is, she raised me AND my brother AND several dogs, cats, and horses. Sure, my dad helped out – the same way my husband does – but it was my mom who made sure it all got done correctly and on time.
Part of those duties included regular feedings. The dogs, cats, and horses got their meals, and so did my dad, brother and I. Again, we helped with that part, but it was mom who planned the meal and, more often than not, was the one who ventured to the grocery store for the ingredients.
That’s why, this Mother’s Day, I’ve decided to treat my mom to a day off. A day off from feeding horses and planning menus. A day off from grocery shopping and cooking. I’ve teamed up with my dad, my husband and my brother to tell my mom to relax while the three of us prepare a meal that I can only hope will come close to the great meals she cooked for us for so many years.
The menu will be comfort food (her specialty). Baked macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs, candied yams, and ham will all be served. The ham, of course, will be a HoneyBaked Ham. HoneyBaked Hams are not only delicious, but they’re fully cooked and ready to serve, which makes it that much easier to prepare!
