As any busy mom will tell you, planning a weekly menu that’s A) varied, B) simple and C) relatively healthy is – for lack of a better word – a pain in the ass.
If only there were a way to have pre-measured, fresh dinner ingredients shipped to my house with handy little recipe cards outlining step-by-step instruction for how to create each meal. Oh wait, there is! It’s called HelloFresh, and I recently had a chance to test out the service with a series of three delicious dinners.
Here’s how the HelloFresh service works:
- You sign up on the HelloFresh website to receive weekly shipments of three meals (with meat or vegetarian) for two, four or six people.
- Each week, you choose from five different recipes planned by the HelloFresh chefs.
- Your three meals are shipped to you and arrive in a box packed with ice packs to keep the ingredients fresh.
- You pay the same price each week regardless of which recipes you choose.
- You can cancel at any time or put your deliveries on hold if you’re going on vacation.
For my three meals, I received Beef & Broccoli Rabe Tostadas with Arugula, Salmon Fillets with Cashew Crust, and Turkey Polpette with Basil Tomato Sauce. All three arrived packed neatly in a box, with the ingredients for each individually bagged, pre-measured and clearly labeled. The dinners each came with a recipe card (below), which detailed step-by-step instruction (with photos) for how to create each meal.
The Beef & Broccoli Rabe Tostada with Arugula included some delicious ingredients that I rarely (if ever) use in my kitchen, like broccoli rabe, arugula, and sun-dried tomatoes.
The finished product was essentially a mini pizza/taco, which made my husband very happy. It also contained lots of fresh veggies, which made me happy. And it included cheese, which made our two-year-old happy.
The next meal was Salmon Fillets with Cashew Crust. Again, very simple ingredients, but it included a few out-of-the-ordinary things like lentils and salmon. (My husband loves salmon. I’m not much of a “fish person,” but I was pleasantly surprised by how this one turned out.)
This one looked amazing – like something you’d order in a fancy restaurant – and despite my ambivalence about fish, I actually enjoyed it! Our two-year-old also seemed to like it, and especially enjoyed the “wentils.”
The last of our three HelloFresh meals was Turkey Polpette with Basil Tomato Sauce. It’s essentially spaghetti with turkey meatballs in a red sauce mixed with a little sour cream and fresh basil. This was the recipe I was most excited about!
The finished product was as tasty as I’d hoped it would be. I’m also happy to report that my first attempt at making turkey meatballs was a success. Overall, this meal scored the most points from all three of us.
So would I order HelloFresh meals again? You bet! If you’re interested in giving HelloFresh a try, you can receive 30% off your first order by entering the coupon code “MOTHERHOOD30”. (Check the delivery areas section of the site to make sure they deliver to your area.)
And here’s a little more info about the service courtesy of the HelloFresh team:

My hubby is a huge fan of Salmon! I can’t wait to try this recipe for him!
Moist and crisp, delicious!
We’re not fish eaters, but your photos make this look so delicious!
I was skeptical at first of salmon delivery, but the raw salmon looks so fresh!
I don’t like fish but it looks so fresh – as does everything else!
WOW, I’m way impressed! Those look amazing.
They need to hurry and get out west! Oh my goodness, I would absolutely LOVE HelloFresh! But i’m in Idaho. We don’t have access to them here. 🙁
Cooking can be hard for me sometimes because of my ailments, so this would be wonderful for my household since I wouldn’t have to stand so long for all the prep work!
Hey ladies, they have a lot more recipes (as shown above) than fish! You can even get vegetarian meals if you like!
That would be a great service to have. I’m not a fan of meal planning and the like.
I have a friend who uses Hello Fresh and loves them – she is single and it works well for her.
This would be perfect for me! I too need a step by step on how to do something I def. want to give this a try 🙂
This sounds like a great program! We never know what to make for dinner and often end up doing the same old stuff… This makes it easy to try different things without having to put too much time into it!
This looks awesome! I want HelloFresh! Also, you take amazing food pics–you’ve got a gift!
Wow that is GREAT! How much is it? I love that it has the nutritional info too.
I am SO jealous. They don’t deliver in my area yet. I hope they do soon, because all of this food looks amazing! I’m not sure I could make them look as pretty as you have, though! lol
