iGuy: The Perfect Protection for Your iPad

Over the past three months, my iPad has been taken over by our two-and-a-half year old. And, to be honest, I couldn’t be happier. That’s because I’ve discovered a treasure trove of interactive learning apps – about 20 and counting – that she adores because they’re entertaining and I adore because they’re educational.

Sure, I still use the iPad to read my books, surf Facebook, dig up recipes, and play Words with Friends, but I definitely don’t mind sharing my high-tech toy with her.

Soon after she began playing with the iPad, I realized that it might be a good idea to invest in a cover for it. I was mainly afraid of her dropping it (although she only plays with it while seated on the couch next to me). I also discovered that while she held the uncovered iPad, her thumbs would sometimes touch the screen, which prevented her from interacting with the apps and would send her into small fits of frustration.

And so, I took the Internet to research kid-friendly iPad covers.

While there are plenty to choose from, I soon settled on the iGuy from Speck Products. The oversized, rubbery foam cover comes in four fun colors – lime, mango, chili pepper, and grape – and is perfect for so many reasons:

  • The iGuy’s “arms” are flexible and easy for little ones to grip and hold on to.
  • Holding onto the arms, helps to keep her fingers off the screen and prevents her from hitting the home button, therefore completely shutting down the app.
  • But you can still easily push the home button to switch between apps.
  • You can still reach all the buttons to change the volume, put the iPad to sleep and plug it in to charge.
  • It’s the perfect size. She can still sit it on her lap, but I know it would be protected if she accidentally drops it.
  • The frame is pretty thick, so if it did hit the floor, the screen wouldn’t even touch it.
  • The iGuy’s “feet” allow it to be free-standing, which means you can sit the iPad upright on a table to watch movies and videos.

It fits all sizes of iPads, including the new iPad 4, and getting the iPad in and out of the cover takes only a few seconds. (I only use the iGuy when she’s playing with the iPad.)

Thanks to my new foam friend, I’m happy, my daughter is happy, and my indispensable iPad is protected from whatever wear-and-tear it might face in the hands of a soon-to-be three-year-old. If you’re looking for a fun iPad cover, you should definitely check out the iGuy by Speck. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter.

I received the iGuy for free for the purpose of this review. I only recommend products or services I use personally believe in. All opinions are my own.
