Us Ladies Have to Stick Together

One of the questions my husband and I often ponder is what our two-and-a-half year old will be when she grows up. If you ask her, she’ll tell you she wants to be a farmer or a “Cinderella princess.” She’ll then immediately change her mind and tell you she wants to be a mermaid.

Of course, all I really want her to be when she grows up is happy. How she arrives at that happiness is up to her, but I like to think she’ll follow her dreams wherever they might lead her. Maybe she’ll be a veterinarian, maybe she’ll be a professional basketball player (she’s got her daddy’s long legs), or maybe she’ll own a business. We could definitely use a few more women-owned businesses in the world, even ones owned by women who really just wanted to be a mermaid.

Walmart understands that, which is why they’ve launched Empowering Women Together. The new program is an online shopping destination featuring products from women-owned business around the world. Empowering Women Together leverages Walmart’s size and scale to offer access to customers for women who otherwise might be unable to attain it.

It’s an admirable effort and it’s part of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment through 2016 to source $20 billion from women-owned businesses.

The products they have in the store are pretty darn cool, too. Dresses from Rwanda, scarves from Ethiopia, earrings from Peru, and vases from Haiti. If you’d like to shop for items made by women-owned businesses here in America, you can do that. Necklaces, cake mix, fair trade coffee, and children’s books – the Empowering Women Together store has them all.

What’s also cool about the online store is that the items not only support women-owned businesses, they’re also available at “Walmart low prices.” (All of the items I mentioned earlier are available for $20 or less.)

With each purchase, you can help lift and empower the women behind these products. You’ll also help create new jobs and improve the lives of countless people around the world. Finally, shopping I can feel good about!

  2. WOW. I’m really impressed. Walmart gets a lot of heat for buying inexpensive Made in Other Countries goods. I’m glad that they are also doing humanitarian work to empower women in impoverished countries. I’m actually shopping for jewelry and dresses for some conferences I’m going to soon. I’m heading over to the store literally right now.
