Why You Should Stop Cleaning and Start “Healthing”

You wouldn’t know it by looking at my living room, which looks like a Toys ‘R Us threw up all over the floor followed by a category two-and-a-half year old hurricane, but I really do try to keep a clean house. I also try to keep it relatively germ-free. One way I do that is by keeping a steady supply of Lysol wipes on hand to clean up spills and other grubby surfaces (which, on some days, is every square inch within reach of my daughter).

One of the reasons I like Lysol wipes, besides their ability to remove all sorts of mysteriously sticky incidents, is Lysol’s new concept of “healthing” instead of merely cleaning.

The healthing initiative aims to keep families as healthy as possible and promotes small changes in our hygiene and cleaning routines. This includes cleaning and disinfecting toys and helping our little ones (and sometimes our husbands) understand the importance of hand washing.

I do both of those – hand washing and toy cleaning – on a regular basis, but I’ve also added a few other things to my healthing rotation. That includes regular cleaning of our toilets with Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, wiping down surfaces in the car (especially after grubby mechanics have had their way with it), and using Lysol disinfectant spray in all sorts of places.

The result is not only a cleaner house, but a healthier one, too. And for that, I couldn’t be happier.

Lysol is spreading the word about healthing by teaming up with TV personality Giuliana Rancic. Together they’re visiting YMCAs across the nation to show off healthing in action and give a hands-on demonstration of how it works. Lysol is also reaching out to 65,000 schools through its healthy habits program.

  1. I love this idea; I looked at the information and think it is great that Lysol is really reaching out like this!

  2. I don’t use Lysol, or any disinfectant. It’s really not good for your immune system to keep your surroundings germ free.

I agree! Which is why I don’t disinfect every single thing in my house and certainly can’t disinfect the whole world, so just we do the best we can with especially grimy things. 🙂

  3. I keep Lysold handy too – for door knobs, light switches and handles.
Our children touch those places everyday and just in case their hands aren’t clean, I’d like to be safe.

  4. I have used Lysol for the longest time! I especially like the wipes. They are so easy to use, and great at cleaning up and disinfecting!

  5. I LOVE Lysol wipes. I keep a container under the sinks in each bathroom and in the kitchen, and use them for my daily “swish and swipe” rituals.

  6. I wholeheartedly agree that disinfecting surfaces on a regular basis is vitally important, especially in a home where children and pets live. However, I have to disagree with the use of Lysol. Most people don’t realize how many toxins are present in Lysol spray and wipes. They do a very good job at marketing their product and they are jumping on the “health” bandwagon. However, they are not approved by the EPA, which means that the product is not only harmful to children and pets, but to the environment as well. There are disinfectants on the market that are non-toxic and kill the same germs (influenza, E.coli, salmonella, strep, staph, H1N1). They are environmentally friendly, safe for the family, and friendly toward the environment.

  7. i use lysol for cleaning too and for air refreshener. Its a little expensive compare to the rest but rest assured that bacterias are 99% gone 🙂

  8. Melanie says:

I use lysol for so many purposes!

  9. That’s a great idea from Lysol! It really is important, especially with all the crazy flu viruses going around now! And also I *love* the first lines of your post – I can totally relate!!

  10. I love Lysol, we use the wipes all the time to clean all kinds of stuff around the house!

  11. Love this! I use their spray around my litter box and never have an issue with kitty litter smell 🙂

  12. I love lysol wipes and i always have some around

  13. I am a huge fan of lysol! I use it A LOT on everything. With three little ones I have to be on top of it to keep them germ free!

  14. I like Lysol products. They have so many great products.

  15. Any sort of product that promotes healthy living is a good product to me. I didn’t have enough Lysol in my house this flu season. We were sick for about 2 months straight and my daughter STILL has an ear infection. SUCKS.

  16. I am in! I love doing anything that promotes health, and I often clean my kids bedrooms when they are not looking and wipe toys, video game consoles, hand controllers, tablet holders, DSi cases, – whatever I find, down with Lysol wipes. I wipe the doorwells and the doorknobs in the house as well. Areas I know people use often and put their hands – I love what Lysol is promoting.

    • I agree. Our home is not a ‘germ-free’ environment, but the first thing we do coming home is wash our hands. I wipe down the same types of things as you do with the wipes, especially when someone is sick! We have six kids, and manage to contain most viruses to three out of eight of us in the house. That’s no small feat! We get sick a lot less than a lot of people we know. Wiping down things like cell phones, etc. after being at school with them helps a lot, too. Studies show that neck ties, cell phones, and purses have the most germs of anything you carry around, especially with doctors–that’s a little disconcerting.

  17. Yep, we’re big fans of Lysol around here too! We have a stockpile of both the standard aerosol spray and wipes. I like the healthing initiative. Gotta keep things healthy!

  18. What a great idea! I love Lysol wipes! They do a perfect job of getting any mess wiped up, and with three messy kids, that happens often!
