VIRGINIA BEACH: NOT JUST FOR LOVERS, BUT LOTS TO LOVE

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

The closest my daughter has come to the beach is a sandbox at the playground. At 20-months some people may be shocked by this. But considering the nearest beach is 4 hours away, we decided it would be best to make the trek when she could appreciate it more. Not that she’s almost 2, I think it’s time to pack our bags and take a family vacation.

But where do you go? The very closest beaches are loaded with teenagers and college kids looking to partaay (can you blame them?), CROWDED and have water so murky that you’re afraid to go in the ocean for fear of what your toes might find … or vice versa.

After much research, we decided Virginia Beach would be the perfect place for our first family vacation. Although Virgina Beach is called “the Beach for Lovers,” it’s very family-friendly with loads of fun activities to delight all ages, and surprisingly all the beaches are FREE. A simple google search will direct you to hundreds of reviews of northeast coast beaches with Virginia Beach always coming out on top. If you’re looking for a clean, fun (but not TOO fun, if you know what I mean), then look no further than Virginia Beach.

THE BEACHES

First up: the beaches. Virginia Beaches’ miles and miles of coastline are made up into 3 distinct areas: Chesapeake Bay, the resort area, and sandbridge.

  • Chesapeake Bay Beaches – If you’re looking for tranquility, you’ll find it here. Even the water keeps a low profile with softer, gentler waves. After you’re done soaking up some sun, head over to neighboring First Landing State Park to explore lagoons, large cypress trees and rare plants. Rent a kayak, go fishing, or hike a few of the 19 miles of hiking trails.
  • Resort Area – The resort area (aka the boardwalk) provides three miles of hotels, restaurants, shopping and activities, perfect for strolling, rollerblading and biking. Nightly entertainment with four oceanfront stages offer live musical acts. And when it’s time to refuel, there are a variety of outside restaurants to enjoy.
  • Sandbridge – The pristine shores of Sandbridge are secluded and quiet. The are no hotels, but the resort area is only 20-minutes away. Breathtaking views, little traffic and no noise make this an ideal place to soak up some sun and much needed peace.

OTHER FUN ACTIVITIES

The beaches and First Landing State Park aren’t the only free activities. The little ones (and adults) will delight in the puppeteers, bands, jugglers and magicians along the sidewalks of Beach Street U.S.A.. In addition multi-cultural celebrations are held throughout the summer along the oceanfront. For just a few dollars, you can peruse historic homes, the Military Aviation Museum, Contemporary Art Center, the Old Coastguard Station, the Virginia Beach Amusement Park (which is free to enter, pay to ride), and the Cape Henry Lighthouse and Memorial Park

From soaking up the sun, building sandcastles and taking a relaxing swim to educational tours, hikes, shopping and more, you’ll start to see how Virginia Beach is the perfect place to lay your towel this summer, love the moment and create memories sure to last a lifetime. Maybe we’ll see you there!

  1. Wow. Your site looks so different!

  2. We live just over an hour away from the Pacific Ocean. We love going to the beach…the kids too. Unfortunately, WA is not so nice so it is a crap shoot on a good time to be there.

  3. I’ve never been to Virginia Beach. It’s on our list of places to take the kids. You make it sound very nice. We may have to take a closer look at spending a few days there this summer.

  4. I have a 4 year old who hasn’t been to the beach yet, he too loves the sandbox. I really hope to take him in the next year or 2!

  5. I LOVE Virginia Beach!! It’s one of my favorite vacation memories 🙂

  6. My kids LOVE the beach, although I’m not terribly fond of the one we usually go to! I’ve been wanting to try out a VA beach, so maybe we’ll actually make the drive this summer!
