Halloween is my fourth favorite holiday (right behind Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter). That might not sound like a high ranking, but when you realize how much decorating I do during Halloween, you know that I take the holiday very seriously. The part of the holiday I have the most fun with is Halloween snacks.

During my big, pre-Halloween trip to Walmart, I picked up some spooky snack essentials, which included some orange Fanta. The Fanta, however, wasn’t only for drinking. It was a key ingredient in what would become Orange Cream Spider Cupcakes. I also picked up some Dasani water, which I would turn into adorable water mummies…but more on that later.

SODA Collage

Okay, so you’re probably wondering about using soda as an ingredient in cupcakes. It’s actually pretty simple (and delicious!), because it replaces the milk, eggs and vegetable oil. But that’s not the only benefit of using soda in your cupcakes and cakes. Here are a few others:

  • Soda is a simple vegan alternative.
  • It’s great for anyone with allergies to eggs.
  • Soda contains less fat and calories than milk, eggs and vegetable oil. You can even use diet soda, although we used regular Fanta for our cupcakes.
  • You can use other flavors of Fanta (all of which are caffeine free). Fanta flavors include grape, peach, grapefruit, apple, pineapple and strawberry. The possibilities are endless!
  • It’s perfect for Halloween parties and super easy compared to making a cake from scratch!

Don’t they look amazing? They really are! Simply mix one box of cake mix and 1.5 cups of soda – any flavor as long as it’s carbonated (do not add the other ingredients on the box). Darker sodas pair better with darker treats (like chocolate) while lighter sodas are best for lighter desserts. For these treats, I mixed French Vanilla Cake Mix with Orange Fanta for an Orange Cream cupcake. Next up – apple cinnamon cupcakes with Apple Fanta and a few dashes of cinnamon!

Oh, about those Dasani mummies. I created those cute little guys to give away during an upcoming Halloween party. To make them, all you need is some gauze wrap (I got mine at Walmart) and some googly eyes! When you get the gauze wrap, do yourself a favor and get the self-sticking kind, which means you won’t need tape or glue.

Another great thing about Dasani water is that all Dasani bottles are made from plant resin and are a special shape that won’t fall over in the fridge. In other words, they’re good for the environment AND they’re sturdy (unlike most “green” plastic water bottles).

I gave my Orange Cream Spider Cupcakes a Halloween makeover by adding little spider legs (shoestring licorice) and eyes (any round candy). The result is a spooktacular dessert that will take your Halloween party to a frighteningly new level!
