SERIOUS POTTY TRAINING TIME

0 Flares 0 Flares ×

My husband and I complement each other in a lot of ways. He’s very laid back. I’m more hyper. He’s extremely patient. I’m umm…not patient. Regardless of how well we mesh, there are some ways in which we don’t. For instance it’s probably not a good idea for two people with serious gag reflexes to have a baby together. Diaper changes go a little something like this:

Him: What is that smell?!

Me: It’s your turn.

Him: Ugh! It’s huge!

Me: *snickers*

Him: *cough*

Me: Hurry up! It stinks!

Him: Stop talking to me. I’m trying not to breathe.

Me: *gag* Use the powder!

Him: Wha *gag* What?

Me: The POWDER! Sprinkle the POWDER!

Although we’ve been practicing with the potty, when little baby poo turns to stinky todder poop, I think it’s about time to get very serious about potty training!

Any potty training tips for us as we embark on this, hopefully short, journey?

  1. Eeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkk! Don’t remind me!

Oliver’s most well formed sentence so far- “I’m not going poopy on the potty anymore!!”. It makes me want to cry. He means it.

  3. All I can say is…make sure you get a seat to put on your regular toilet and a good sturdy step stool! I still have not decided if emptying a full potty chair is less gross than changing a poopy diaper. And since you both have a strong gag reflex….straight into the toilet sounds like the best option for you two! Lol! And my best recommendation is bribery works great for potty training!! Skittles, m&m’s or whatever is your kids currancy will be what you should use! My kids were statisfied with the crazy potty song and dance I did for them when they worst potty! And ruffled panties were also great for my daughter and Ninja Turtle underwear for my son. I would let them wear the teasured panties/underwear as long as they stayed clean…if there was an accident they had to put a pull up on for the rest of day. This would break my daughters heart and my son would be bummed but not too badly thus he took way longer to train than my daughter but from what I hear that tends to be a norm between boys and girls. Good Luck!!

  4. There are a lot of good suggestions out there. I think the big thing is to be patient. Potty training can take time and the road is never smooth. Rewards worked really well for my children. We gave them a smartie for using the potty, extra for pooping. 😉 I know food rewards are bad but once they were fully trained we had no problems eliminating the smarties.

  5. We have a potty trained Sphynx cat! It took 8 weeks…. not the same.. I know. We are about to have our first baby.. hope the cat can help us teach our little girl when it’s time haha.

  6. Visiting from SITS and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your site! But, ugh, this another reminder doing the potty training thing One… More… Time. Child number 5 and I still dread it. lol Super funny post though, but spot on. Biggest suggestion, take a week, take away the diapers and set the timer every 30 minutes. If they are ready, it usually does the trick. Can’t wait to read more of your posts!

Potty training seems like it’s taking me forever with my daughter! I wish that she would do it more often!

  8. Ugh, I am with you. We are just starting to work with our daughter on potty training. So far we’re just taking a very slow and laid back approach, but I think we are going to try to step it up in a couple of days and try the “nothing on the bottom” approach. Don’t know if it will work or not–a bunch of my friends with kids swear by that method, so we’ll see! Good luck!

  9. Every kid’s different, but I wouldn’t spend a lot of money at it. When they’re ready, they’re ready. You could try expectant potty training…if you see that poopy face, hold them over the toilet till they’re done! The best thing I’ve seen is positive reinforcement, though. Stickers when you’ve gone on the potty….maybe you get 2 for poop or something lol

  10. I know this sucks to hear.. BUT when they are ready (or at least show signs of being ready.) We kept trying with my son and it was a mess (ha!). Once he was ready he had a handful of accidents. (He trained ay and night at the same time.) Good luck

  11. My only tip is- they are all different. If you have one person tell you a method they swear by and it doesn’t work for you- move on to the next thing. He will eventually figure it out. I have 2 little boys I am in the middle of potty training and I can’t wait to be done with it. Twins make diaper costs even crazier! lol

  12. Haha! I remember those days and I am SO glad they are over! Loved this!

  13. this post is so funny! Reminds me of the potty training days…

  14. My husband and I do this too. Sometimes if I see Z make a pooping face, I’ll say I have to do laundry or something else that takes a long time just to give the baby time to finish his business, my older son’s super sense of smell to notice the dirty business and hubby to change him. I then walk back into the room all “Oh, did he poop?”

Rewards and lots of naked time worked great with my oldest two. Z is still young, but is starting to show signs of readiness, so I’m hoping it’ll go smoothly.

    Good luck to you!
