Papa Don’t Preach: A Zevia Soda Review

zevia sodaWhen it comes to soda, I’m more of a connoisseur than momma is (see also: ice cream, fish sticks, giant burgers, anything with bacon). So when she asked me if I’d like to taste and review six flavors of Zevia soda, I eagerly accepted. And when an assorted six-pack of the fizzy concoction arrived in the mail last week, I was giddy with excitement about the official tasting and reviewing duties that lie ahead.

Before we get started, some background about Zevia may be necessary. Zevia is a zero calorie soda (to keep my svelte figure, I refuse to drink anything else). Instead of being sweetened with artificial sweeteners like other diet sodas, it’s sweetened with Stevia, which is some sort of really sweet shrub grown in a far away magical land. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it’s fertilized with unicorn poop.

Back to the taste test.

I tore open the box and held the six colorful cans up as if I had just delivered a baby. I grinned like a goon at my wife. She gave me a little smile/nod that seemed to say, “You don’t even get that excited when you see me naked.” (For the record, I do.) To speed the cooling process, the cans went immediately into the freezer. While they chilled (the Zevia folks clearly stated that the colder the soda, the better it tastes) I finished off the ice cream I removed to make room for my new arrival.

And then I waited.

To pass the time, I grabbed a piece of paper from our little one’s sketch pad and wrote down the names of each flavor. I sharpened two pencils. I ate some more ice cream. I paced. I read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” (to myself, the little one was napping). I opened the freezer to make sure it was functioning properly. It had only been five minutes, but it felt like five days.

When the timer on the stove went off, I bolted for the kitchen. They were ready, but where would I start? The Zevia folks sent us six different flavors: Cola, “Dr. Zevia” (Dr. Pepper’s twin brother), Grape, Black Cherry, Grapefruit Citrus, and “Mountain Zevia” (a Mountain Dew clone). As a rabid Dew fan, I popped open the Mountain Zevia, took a sip and was pleasantly surprised. The Grapefruit Citrus was next. Mmmm … grapefruity.

Fast forward 36 hours. All six flavors had been consumed, detailed notes had been take on each, and I was sad that my Zevia was gone. But it was a great 36 hours. Bottom line: The soda tasted great, and the Stevia made it sweeter than other zero-calorie diet sodas, which was a nice surprise. The Grape and Black Cherry also added a twist by being clear in color, which makes them a non-staining, kid-friendly option.

Would I buy Zevia? Yes, in fact I’m buying some today after finding out that my local grocery store sells it. You can, too, by checking the Get Zevia link on the company’s website. You can also connect with them on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. And finally, if you’d like to win a free six-pack of Zevia to try for yourself, enter the raffle thingy below. Remember, you don’t have to complete all tasks (just one), however, each task is worth more entries.

Good luck!

I received the above products through Sublime Media Connection in exchange for an honest Zevia soda review. In no way was I asked to give a positive review.

  1. Mountain Zevia is my favorite, and I like that they made the caffeine content higher in that one like Mountain Dew. Cherry Cola is also high on my list, followed by Dr. Zevia and their ginger ale. I heard a rumor that they may even be coming out with syrups for the Soda Stream, which would make me very happy.

  2. My hubby loved the Blackcherry!
