PAPA DON’T PREACH: ABC, 1-2-3

It’s crazy and a little bit frightening how fast our little one is becoming a not-so-little one. In the past six months, between the ages of 18 and 24 months, she’s learned her ABC’s (although I’m pretty sure she thinks the “and” between Y and Z is a letter) and she can count to 20. She knows all her colors and shapes, too. Teaching these skills to a not-quite 2 year old is often like talking to a drunk person, as you can see in the video below.

Lately, she’s started talking in sentences. Sure, most of them are garbled and unintelligible, but there’s definitely a noun and a verb in there – sometimes even an adverb – which means she well on her way to being a chatty two-year-old.

The other day, in fact, I had a surprisingly coherent phone conversation with her when I called home during my evening commute. To the best of my recollection, it went a little something like this:

DADDY: Hello! Did you have a good day!

BABY: Goooo day!

DADDY: Good! Were you a good girl for mommy?

BABY: I gooo girl!

DADDY: That’s good! I’m on my way home! Did you miss me?

BABY: Meee you!

DADDY: I missed you too! We’re having pizza for dinner. Do you like pizza?

BABY: I like peeeeza!

She got pretty distracted after I mentioned pizza, but as conversations go, it was better than some exchanges I have with actual adults.

I’m trying to teach her new things, too. Our current evening lesson plans involve throwing and catching a ball. She’s got the throwing part down, but the catching is a little trickier. I remind her that it’s hard to catch a ball with your face, but she gives it her best shot.

She’s still too young to learn the intricacies of modern baseball, but I’ll bet you my favorite Mets shirt that she’ll have a deeper appreciate of the game by the time she’s four. Until then, we’ll stick with numbers, colors, and ball catching.
