Meet Oscar. He’s the newest addition to our family (a very welcome gift for our three-year-old from Grammy), and he’s a 13-week-old Blue Point Himalayan cat. He’s also spoiled rotten, but can you blame us? I mean, look at him. He’s adorable! And so are our other 3 furbabies. Below are Bocca and Harley (both rescues).

And Ali, our purebred boxer. Yes, they are sharing the dog bed, holding paws. Oh my heart!

Just like I did when our daughter was born, I’ve gone above and beyond when it comes to researching healthy cat food options for our little fur balls and insisting on feeding only the best. One of the brands that won me over during my countless hours of research was Sheba, which I recently found at Walmart. (You might have seen commercials for Sheba with Eva Longoria from Desperate Housewives. Boy, do I miss that show!)

One of the best things about Sheba is that all Sheba canned cat food recipe is formulated without grains or corn. This is VITALLY important, because many cat foods are filled with grains and corn, which acts as a low-cost filler and lead to a slew of health problems, including obesity and diabetes. These fillers have little or no nutritional value, and since cats are instinctively trained to eat as much as they have to in order to get the nutrients they need, they end up eating more of these “filler foods” than they should. The result: You end buying more of the “cheaper” foods, which means you pay more in the long run. (Another result is that your cat will poop more often, which means you’ll spend more money on cat litter … and more time scooping the litter.)

Oh, and another thing about canned cat food: Cats don’t have a natural thirst drive, which means they have to drink lots of water if they’re on a dry food-only diet. The only problem is, drinking water doesn’t come naturally to cats, and many don’t drink enough of it, which can lead to kidney and urinary tract problems. Wet canned food, on the other hand, is loaded with moisture, which means cats get more of the water they need simply by eating, which is how cats in the wild get most of the water they need, too!

What I also like about Sheba is their dedication to responsibly sourced seafood. Sheba entrees use only farmed or wild-caught fish from environmentally responsible sources. In addition to its chicken, turkey and beef options, Sheba also offers five varieties of responsibly-sourced whitefish, tuna and seafood options. By the end of 2013, all Sheba seafood recipes—including salmon—will meet the Seafood Watch recommendations

Of course, our little fur balls don’t care about things like responsible sourcing, but it matters to me. All they care about when it comes to food is taste. And as you can see from the photo below, Oscar definitely approves! (His favorite is Sheba’s Chicken & Liver entrée.) The other two are big fans as well! And of course, the pooch looks on, hoping for some wayward crumbs.

  1. You’ve got quite a fur family there! Your cat could be on the Sheba commercials 🙂

  2. I love the names you picked for your cats, and it was a treat to look at all this cuteness!

    • Momma on the Rocks Momma on the Rocks says:

Aww thanks! Ali is named after the boxer. Harley got her name because she purrs a lot, loudly. Bocca got his name because I found him outside in freezing temperatures just born with the umbilical still attached. He was crying so loudly, which is what saved him. (Bocca means mouth in Italian.) And we thought Oscar sort of reminded us of Oscar the grouch. lol

  3. So super cute – I remember we had such a hard time when we got our puppy with his food

    • Momma on the Rocks Momma on the Rocks says:

It can be a challenge. The best advice I can give anyone is to read labels and avoid corn and rice fillers.

  4. I also do a lot of research on pet food. It is really important to feed them the best food, at least in my opinion. I love the pictures and the one with the cat and dog holding paws is so cute.

    • Momma on the Rocks Momma on the Rocks says:

It’s funny because the first 2 days that Oscar was here, the dog wouldn’t go near him and Oscar would arch his back and hiss anytime the dog even moved. But then one day, Oscar crawled in his bed with him and they’ve been good friends since! 🙂

  5. Oscar is adorable. I have a dog. It is amazing what is in dog food! SCARY! Kingers only eats high quality natural food. I believe we are what we eat and that goes for animals too!

  6. Love the pictures of the puppy with the kitty <3 So cute. We're a dog family though my 8yo dd would love a cat!

  7. Your cat is so adorable!

  8. Oh, she is so adorable! I love cats too and yes, they really need to eat healthy food.

  9. Your cat is SO fluffy! I sooo want a cat like that. I don’t have any cats so I haven’t looked into cat foods too much but after getting a dog for the first time about 3 months ago ive been shocked at the quality difference between brands. Reading ingredient labels is a huge eye opener.

  10. Super cute! I used to have a brother and sister cat pair. We got them as kittens, they were siamese, blue point, snow shoe cats. The male Stormy was all gray short haired with blue eyes and white paws. The female Sky was fluffy haired, blue eyes, and snow white paws. She hated humans, he loved humans.

    • Momma on the Rocks Momma on the Rocks says:

Awww! Himalayans are part siamese, part Persian, so they have a little bit of the Siamese personality. I love it!

  11. Oh my goodness, she is adorable and looks so cuddly. It is crazy that some people don’t realize that even animals need to eat well and that some food is really just ‘junk’

    • Momma on the Rocks Momma on the Rocks says:

Yep! It would be like eating sugary cereal or fast food for every meal, every day of your life. You’d be fat and sick. No fun.

  12. She is so cute! What a beautiful cat!

  13. That is just the cutest little fluff ball ever!!! 🙂

  14. Oscar is a gorgeous kitty! He looks like he’s really enjoying his meal in that last photo!

    • Momma on the Rocks Momma on the Rocks says:

Oh yes! He always does! While I’m getting his food ready, he’s meowing and pawing at me and I swear he’d follow me to the ends of the Earth while I have that bowl in my hands! lol

  15. That has to be one of the cutest cats I have ever seen. I love how fluffy cats like to lay on their back and stretch out. It’s one of the cutest things ever.

  16. beautiful cats, I’m jealous because my cat died a few months ago he had a bad UTI, the surgery was over a thousand dollars & I could not afford it so I had to put him to sleep, or he just would have suffered. But your cats are so fluffy and adorable

  17. I’m not usually a big fan of cats, but these photos are melting my heart right now! Congratulations on bringing home a new fur baby! And good for you for ensuring that your pets are eating well. I feel like so many people just feed their pets whatever is cheapest without giving much regard to their health, so it’s refreshing to read that you aren’t following that route.

  18. Aw! He is such a cutie! We have three cats as well, two of whom are rescued. They have to eat a special cat food because one has a grain allergy.

  19. Oh my!!!! I think that is probably the most adorable fur baby that I have ever seen!!!!

  20. What a fancy cat! My boys won’t go for wet food, we just stick with cans of whole white tuna.

  21. Those are great pictures! I miss having a cat. Unfortunately we had to give him up after the birth of my second son who had a sever asthmatic reaction to him! I agree with you that healthy cat food is needed from Kittenhood until adulthood!
