You see it all the time in the movies. Two people meet in an impossibly romantic fashion, then they fall in love and live happily ever after. My husband and I did all of that, but we didn’t really have the impossibly romantic first meeting. Truth is, we met because I sat next to him at work. See? Not all that romantic.

But it gets kind of romantic – almost “Sleepless in Seattle” romantic – when you consider how many times we almost met in the past, but somehow seemed to miss each other.

It started in high school. That’s right, we went to the same high school and didn’t even know it until years later! He was a graduating senior when I was a freshman, so it’s kind of understandable that we might not have crossed paths back then, but it was kind of funny nonetheless. But alas, we did not meet in high school, nor would there have been any spark if we had. After all, he was a suave senior and I was a naïve freshman.

After high school, my husband left our little corner of Pennsylvania to serve in the Navy. Five years later, he got out of the Navy and went off to college. Of all the colleges he could have chosen, guess which one he chose? That’s right, mine. Only this time, I was the suave graduating senior when he was a naïve freshman. We even shared the same major! Did destiny finally bring us together after causing us to narrowly miss each other five years earlier in high school? Nope.

Five more years went by and he was a first-year employee at an advertising agency. I had just left a job working at the state and was looking for a job in PR. One thing led to another and I landed a gig at the same agency he was working at. I was assigned a seat next to him. Did destiny finally bring us together? This time, she did. And we lived happily ever after!
