Yesterday, I wrote about my recent trip down memory lane when I spent far too much time reminiscing over our honeymoon photos from Hawaii. The sun, the sand, the food and, of course, the drinks. It was one of the best weeks of my life!

One of my favorite “food and drink” memories from our Hawaiian honeymoon was a simple dinner we enjoyed at a quaint little Italian restaurant just a few blocks from Waikiki Beach. The food was fantastic and so were the cocktails, and I decided to recreate that memory with last night’s dinner – pineapple pizza and a “Lava Flow” cocktail.

The pizza only played a supporting role in my attempt to recreate this memory. The real star was the cocktail, and the key ingredient in the cocktail was a pina colada natural fruit bar from Fruti. I got mine at Sam’s Club in a variety pack that included flavors like pina colada, strawberry, strawberry cream, and Caribbean Mix. They’re delicious all by themselves, but they also make a great addition to a drink like the one I was about to make.

Banana, strawberries, pineapple juice, Bacardi coconut rum, pina colada Fruti bars, and fresh pineapple (for garnish) are all you really need to whip this delicious beverage. You’ll also need a blender, of course, but you can get a decent one for about $40, so there’s no reason not to make the investment.

What I really like about the Fruti bars is that they use actual fruit. The manufacturer of the bars, Natural Fruit Corporation, takes pride in selecting premium fresh fruit from around the world to make the bars. They’re created using a “fruit first formulation,” which means the bars contain more fruit than any other ingredient. Even though I was using them in an adult beverage, this “fruit first” approach also makes them a delicious and nutritious snack for our two-year-old, popsicle-crazed daughter!

With the pizza in the oven, it was time to get started on the drinks! After blending the strawberries and rum, pour that mixture into two glasses. Rinse out the blender, combine the bananas, pineapple juice, and two pina colada Fruti bars in the blender and give a whirl.

After the second batch of ingredients are blended, pour the mixture into the glasses on top of the red mixture created earlier. Add this part slowly, to avoid mixing the two halves. They’ll slowly combine on their own, creating a very cool effect that gives the drink its “Lava Flow” name.

Oh, and don’t forget the pizza! Ours was a half-pineapple (my half) and half-pepperoni (his half) creation that paired beautifully with the Fruti bar cocktail!

Drinks always make me chatty, so I’m going to offer a few extra reasons to pick up some of these Fruti bars. Because they use so much real fruit (there are actual CHUNKS of fruit in those things!), they don’t need to add any artificial colors or flavors to the bars. There’s also no high fructose corn syrup. And because Fruti cares about purity, the fruit & water-based bars are now verified by the Non-GMO Project.

What it all adds up to is a snack that’s great for adults, great for kids, and DEFINITELY great for a mixed drink trip down memory lane. Aloha!
