I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Aflac. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Aflac duckIn our family, I’m the accountant. I’m the one who balances the checkbook, I’m the one who pays the bills, and I’m the one who worries about our cash flow when that flow gets a little low. Trust me, it’s better that way. If those tasks were up to my husband … well, let’s just say we’d probably be on a first-name basis with several collection agencies.

As the family bean-counter, one of my tasks (worries) is making sure our insurance policies cover us in case of an accident. One of those policies is our health insurance. It’s expensive, that’s for sure, but it covers us well. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to have health insurance or have good insurance.

For the uninsured or underinsured, common illnesses and injuries can result in thousands of dollars in unexpected out-of-pocket medical costs and living expenses. Some medical conditions, like cancer, stroke and broken bones, can rack up costs as high as some mortgages!

Thankfully, there are tools out there that help put those costs in perspective before the unexpected happens. One of those tools is the Aflac Real Cost Calculator.

Aflac cost

The Aflac Real Cost Calculator is a tool that shows the average out-of-pocket expenses associated with a number of injuries and illnesses. The calculator specifically includes the medical costs and living expenses not covered by major medical insurance for several types of cancer, stroke, heart attack, diabetes, broken bones, and more.

What’s nice about the Aflac Real Cost Calculator is that it goes beyond the medical costs and also shows you the comprehensive costs of illness and injury. Unexpected costs of treatment can include expenses not covered by major medical insurance, such as deductibles and co-pays, and costs for things like transportation to follow-up medical appointments.

I put the Real Cost Calculator to the test, and the results were eye-opening to say the least. For example, I learned that the “real cost” of a broken leg – with our average health insurance – is $11,661. The “real cost” of childhood pneumonia is $9,436. And the average cost of diabetes is $19,431. A handy “How Aflac can help” button shows how the insurance company’s health insurance policies can help reduce some of those startling numbers.

If you’re like me – the family accountant/worrier – feel free to give the Real Cost Calculator a try for yourself. I can’t promise that the truth it reveals will make you any less worried, but it’ll definitely deliver the cold, hard truth, and that’s a priceless benefit most insurance providers don’t offer.

  9. We’re a military family but my husband’s enlistment is up soon so we’ve been thinking about health care a lot lately. Last month our oldest daughter broke her ankle and then got a staph infection! We’re in the doctor’s office at least once a month. We get a statement showing us what treatment would have cost if we weren’t in the military and it absolutely blows me away.

I was in a horrific car accident in ’95 and totally UNPREPARED… if it wasn’t the other drivers fault, I’d still be paying for it all these years later! You just never know! SO so so important!!
