Gesundheit! How I Beat the Common Cold (And You Can Too)

Little Remedies Honey Elixir[1]Our household is finally getting over its first (and hopefully last) outbreak of the cold and flu season. It started with my husband. Then it spread to our two-year-old. Then it spread to yours truly. It was a rough one, too, sending each of us to our local doctor for a check-up. (Mine turned into bronchitis. Fun!)

One thing I have learned over the years, is that fighting a cold is a lot easier when you have the right supply of cold and flu medicine and supplies on hand. That includes plenty of tissues, chicken noodle soup, decongestants, and Vitamin C tablets. For our two-year-old, that stockpile includes Little Remedies products.

What I like most about Little Remedies is that their “less is more” philosophy. Their products contain only what is needed to make your child feel better – no saccharin, alcohol, artificial flavors, artificial coloring, dyes or harmful preservatives.  In other words, it’s a more natural approach to fighting illness, which is something I’ve always believed is best.

Two of my favorite go-to Little Remedies products are their Honey Elixir (for colds) and Little Remedies for Fevers Infant Fever/Pain Reliever.

Honey Elixir is a natural alternative to traditional cough syrup products. As the name suggests, it’s made with great tasting honey to soothe coughs and sore throats naturally. The Infant Fever/Pain Reliever temporarily reduces fever and minor aches and pains due to common cold, flu, headache, sore throat and toothache. It’s one of the only brand name fever reducers for infants currently on the market.

Of course, a little prevention is often the best medicine. Below are a few things I try to do to keep everyone healthy and happy during cold and flu season. What things do you do to keep viruses at bay?

  1. KEEP IT CLEAN – I’m a nut about washing hands and keeping organic sanitizing wipes around the house to clean high traffic surfaces. And wipes for public places too, of course!
  1. AVOID SICK KIDS – This goes without saying and isn’t always easy, but if my child is sick, I respectfully avoid putting her in contact with other kids.
  1. COVER UP – This is a classic lesson, but I always try to sneeze into a tissue and cough into my elbow to keep my hands clean and avoid contaminating other surfaces.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Little Remedies. I received product samples as well as a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

  1. Interesting post, usually when someone gets sick around here we peel onions and stick them in jars, its amazing how quickly we get better. The onion turns black and nasty in the jar toss it and put out a new one. We use a lot of homeopathic and natural medications when someone gets sick, so I will check out these products.

  2. We had the flu run through our house during the holiday season. It was terrible, but we got through it.Hopefully it won’t be so bad for you guys!

  3. Our secret at home for beating the common cold is by taking vitamin d-3.

  4. Thanks for the tips. My oldest son and myself have had a cold for what seems like forever. Will definitely be trying your advice. Luckily, the other two boys have not gotten it yet.

  5. I’ve been trying to teach my kids some of the classic rules for keeping well and also protecting others from cold germs. Like sneezing through your tissue, or into your forearm. My 8 year old son doesn’t seem at all inclined to learning. These are great tips. Thanks

  6. Thank you for the tips! I used to be sick all the times when I was teaching!

  7. Thanks so much, both of my kiddos are feeling under the weather. My youngest was a preemie and has asthma so even a simple cold can be brutal. The Dr’s still dont have the right meds for him so anything I can try to kick a cold in the butt is great!

  8. Thanks for the tips and we {I literally just knocked on wood} have not seen the flu bug around the house!

  9. I have taught my kids to sneeze in their elbow.

  10. What great ideas! Teaching them young is key! So many germs at school, it’s surely a challenge to keep healthy. Thanks for the tips!

  14. I <3 Little Remedies. If they have it in Canada, I'm going to have to grab that one! We haven't been sick-free since my son started preschool in January.

  15. I love their products. It’s all we use with our kids.

  16. Savannah Miller says:

I have to try them! My little guy is always sick he is in preschool and parents keep sending their sick kids to school.

  17. I had never heard of Little Remedies until I cleaned out my sister’s cupboards at Christmastime (that’s right, I am the best big sister!) and organized her meds, getting rid of the expired ones and putting all like meds together. I agree with all of your hints. Something else I’ve learned over the last two years is humidity. It’s so dry in Ohio during the winter, so instead of a using a cool air humidifier which can breed bacteria and such, I simply use plain old water in my vaporizer. I can tell that my mucus membranes are able to produce mucus instead of getting dried up, cracking and bleeding. I think that help a LOT with keeping yuckies away for me.

  18. Sounds so interesting. We don’t have kiddo’s but I will share with my firiends who do!!

  19. Cate Salinard says:

Finally a cold medicine for a toddler! I have to try this! Thanks to your blog now I know I actually have an option when Mason is sick. I love the little noses they make…it has helped me so many times with Mason.

  20. Thanks for the tip!

  21. I love that this medicine doesn’t contain all the extra “crap”. It can be so hard to find medications that don’t these days!

  22. I like natural medicine, you know it is safe to give to your kids.

  23. I’ve had so much luck with the Little Remedies products, but I didn’t know about the Honey Elixir–thanks for the suggestion!

  24. I’ve never tried Little Remedies, but I may need to with the house full of sniffles I have right now! Thanks for sharing!

  25. We have this and I love it!

  26. I love Little Remedies! My kids are all getting too big for it now, though. I need to find something similar!

  27. Working in an emergency room, I have seen so many sick people lately that just don’t know how to take care of themselves! Thanks for this post. I hope it helps somebody to not have to go to the hospital for the cold/flu when the symptoms can be treated easily at home.
